PhD in Advanced X-ray Computed Tomography Metrology for Turbomachinery
Fully funded PhD position to develop industrial X-ray computed tomography for next-generation small-scale turbomachinery manufacturing.
Best for:Best for engineering graduates with a strong background in metrology, manufacturing technologies, or computational modeling, seeking interdisciplinary research at the intersection of sustainable energy and precision measurement.
Overview
This fully funded PhD position at the University of Padova focuses on advancing X-ray computed tomography (XCT) metrology for small-scale turbomachinery used in sustainable energy applications. The project, part of the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network TURBO-IMPACT, aims to enhance manufacturing precision and quality control for components with complex geometries and multi-material interfaces. The successful candidate will collaborate with academic and industrial partners across Europe, including secondments at KU Leuven, DTU, and TEC Eurolab. The research will bridge advanced manufacturing, measurement science, and sustainable energy technologies, contributing to a vision of digitalized, zero-defect production.
What you'll do
- Develop advanced X-ray computed tomography (XCT) methods for inspecting and qualifying next-generation small-scale turbomachinery components with complex internal geometries and tight tolerances.
- Translate functional and manufacturing requirements into accurate measurement strategies, identifying and mitigating error sources in XCT processes.
- Design robust metrology methods for both geometrical and dimensional analysis, as well as internal defect detection in multi-material interfaces.
- Apply developed solutions to advanced components and manufacturing routes within the TURBO-IMPACT project, linking measurement data to process optimization and component qualification.
- Collaborate closely with 13 other doctoral candidates and academic/industrial partners across Europe, including research secondments at KU Leuven, DTU, and TEC Eurolab.
- Contribute to the project’s vision of digitalized, sustainable, and zero-defect manufacturing through integrated data analysis and process optimization.
