Overview

This PhD position at Wetsus investigates the origins of ultra-weak photon emission (UPE) in water and explores its applicability as a non-chemical detection tool for water treatment methods. The project combines photonics, water technology, and microbiological analysis to build a scientifically controlled measurement framework. The successful candidate will perform ultra-sensitive optical measurements, physicochemical assays, and collaborative microbiological profiling. The role demands rigorous experimental control to distinguish genuine optical signals from environmental artifacts and background noise.

What you'll do

  • Develop and apply a multidisciplinary experimental workflow to investigate ultra-weak photon emission from water samples.
  • Perform optical measurements utilizing photon-counting systems and assist in delayed luminescence experiments.
  • Conduct physicochemical measurements including pH, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, dynamic light scattering, and zeta potential analysis.
  • Collaborate with project partners to support microbiological analyses such as flow cytometry and advanced microbial profiling.
  • Process, analyze, and interpret experimental datasets, comparing treated and untreated water samples to evaluate underlying mechanisms.
