PhD Studentship: Ecological Adaptation and Salinity Resilience in Wild Beet
Explore plant adaptation to salinity and drought through field ecology, plant physiology, and genetic mapping in a CASE project with Lion Seeds Ltd.
Best for:Best for graduates in ecology, plant biology, or environmental science with an interest in combining fundamental research with applied crop improvement and commercial breeding.
Overview
This PhD studentship at the University of Essex focuses on understanding how wild sea beet (Beta vulgaris subsp. maritima) adapts to salinity and drought, bridging fundamental ecology with applied crop improvement. The project combines fieldwork, plant ecophysiology, and quantitative genetics to investigate adaptive traits in wild populations and translate findings into salinity-resilient sugar beet varieties. Collaborating with Lion Seeds Ltd., the candidate will gain hands-on experience in commercial breeding, germplasm development, and translating wild species traits into improved crops. The interdisciplinary training spans field ecology, physiological phenotyping, genetic mapping, and statistical analysis in R, preparing for careers in academia, industry, or environmental research.
What you'll do
- Conduct fieldwork to phenotype wild sea beet populations across environmental gradients, including soil and habitat characterisation.
- Analyse ecophysiological traits (e.g., photosynthesis, water-use efficiency) linked to environmental stress tolerance.
- Develop and analyse a sea beet × sugar beet mapping population to identify genomic regions associated with salinity resilience.
- Collaborate with Lion Seeds Ltd. to translate research findings into practical breeding strategies for improved sugar beet varieties.
- Perform statistical analysis using R to relate genetic variation, phenotypic traits, and environmental factors.
- Present research findings at conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Engage in interdisciplinary training in field ecology, plant physiology, and commercial crop breeding.
