PhD Programme in Optics & Photonics
Join an elite, interdisciplinary doctoral programme at the Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics.
Best for:Highly motivated researchers with a strong background in physics, engineering, or natural sciences seeking an interdisciplinary PhD.
Overview
The Karlsruhe School of Optics & Photonics (KSOP) at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology offers a structured, three-year PhD programme focused on the rapidly evolving field of optics and photonics. Candidates engage in high-level research across five core areas, including photonic materials, quantum optics, and biomedical photonics. Beyond their primary research, students participate in a modular training programme that integrates technical, scientific, and management skills to prepare them for leadership roles in academia or industry. The programme emphasizes interdisciplinary collaboration, supported by a team of two advisors and a mentor for each doctoral researcher.
What you'll do
- Conduct independent, high-quality doctoral research within one of the five KSOP research areas.
- Participate in at least three elite PhD course modules covering technical, scientific, and management topics.
- Present research findings at the Karlsruhe Days of Optics & Photonics or the KSOP Summer School at least three times during the programme.
- Engage in regular knowledge exchange within method-oriented working groups.
- Collaborate with two academic advisors and a mentor to ensure the quality and progress of the doctoral thesis.
- Attend annual colloquia and interact with industry partners to bridge the gap between research and application.
