PhD Position in Sustainable 3D-Printable Non-Isocyanate Polyurethane Composite Adhesives
Develop bio-based, 3D-printable adhesives with dynamic covalent bonds for circular economy applications.
Best for:Best for chemical engineers or materials scientists with expertise in polymer chemistry, 3D printing, and sustainable materials development.
Overview
This PhD position at the Universidad del País Vasco (UPV/EHU) focuses on advancing sustainable materials science by designing novel bio-based, 3D-printable non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) adhesives. The research will explore how network architecture, hydrogen-bond density, and nanoparticle integration influence adhesion properties, failure mechanisms, and controlled debonding. The goal is to establish structure–rheology–performance relationships to create next-generation adhesive technologies that balance robustness with localized, on-demand debonding capabilities. The project aligns with circular economy principles and aims to contribute fundamental insights into reversible adhesive networks. Applicants should have a strong background in chemical engineering or a related field and a passion for sustainable materials innovation.
What you'll do
- Design and synthesize novel bio-based, 3D-printable non-isocyanate polyurethane (NIPU) adhesives incorporating dynamic covalent bonds and photothermally active nanoparticles.
- Investigate the relationship between network architecture, hydrogen-bond density, chain mobility, and nanoparticle-induced local heating on adhesion properties and failure mechanisms.
- Develop experimental methods to characterize the structure–rheology–performance relationships of the adhesive materials.
- Evaluate the performance of the adhesives under multi-stimuli-responsive conditions, including controlled debonding capabilities.
- Contribute to the development of next-generation circular adhesive technologies that combine robust bonding with localized, on-demand debonding.
- Publish research findings in high-impact scientific journals and present results at international conferences.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams to advance sustainable materials science.
