PhD Studentship: Exploring the Magmatic Plumbing System of the Eastern Caribbean Volcanic Arc
Investigate crustal structures and magmatic plumbing systems using advanced seismic tomography in the Eastern Caribbean.
Best for:Best for geoscience graduates with an interest in volcanology, seismology, and computational geophysics.
Overview
This PhD studentship offers an exciting opportunity to research the magmatic plumbing systems of the Eastern Caribbean volcanic arc, with an initial focus on Saint Vincent. Hosted at the University of East Anglia as part of the ARIES Doctoral Training Partnership, the project integrates seismic data, ambient noise tomography, and local earthquake tomography to model shallow and deep crustal structures. The successful candidate will work within a multi-disciplinary research team funded by NERC, gaining hands-on expertise in seismic data processing and numerical modelling. Applicants are expected to hold a relevant geoscience degree and demonstrate enthusiasm for geophysical research and computational methods.
What you'll do
- Process and analyze seismic data obtained from regional seismic networks and recent experiments.
- Apply ambient noise tomography to image the shallow upper crust and track temporal changes.
- Implement local earthquake tomography models to examine velocity structures extending into the lower crust.
- Integrate seismic velocity models with complementary geophysical datasets such as density and electrical resistivity.
- Collaborate with partner institutions including the Seismic Research Centre at the University of the West Indies.
- Participate in broader environmental sciences training provided through the ARIES Doctoral Training Partnership.
