PhD Research Assistant in Heat Exchanger Innovations
Develop advanced multi-physics models and coatings for high-temperature heat exchangers in corrosive environments.
Best for:Best for recent engineering graduates with a strong foundation in mechanical engineering, computational modelling, and experimental research skills, seeking to specialise in heat transfer and materials science.
Overview
This PhD position at Brunel University London focuses on advancing heat exchanger technology through multi-physics modelling and experimental validation. The project aims to create generalised tools for industrial high-temperature heat pumps, optimise multi-layer coatings for durability, and design novel bonding methods. Offer holders will work as research assistants, contributing to a broader initiative in mechanical engineering while pursuing a PhD. The research targets heat exchanger components exposed to harsh conditions, with a strong emphasis on material science and manufacturing innovation. Applicants should be eager to bridge computational modelling with experimental validation in an interdisciplinary engineering context.
What you'll do
- Develop generalised multi-physics modelling tools for industrial high-temperature heat exchangers, integrating material selection and modern manufacturing methods.
- Create parametric models for multi-layer coatings to enhance durability and reduce costs, considering interfacial features and heat transfer formulations.
- Design and experimentally validate novel coatings and bonding methods for heat exchanger components exposed to corrosive and erosive environments.
- Conduct research leading to a PhD, contributing to publications and conference presentations in mechanical engineering and materials science.
- Collaborate with industry partners to ensure practical applicability of research outcomes.
- Present research findings at internal and external conferences and workshops.
