PhD Position: Compact Terahertz Instruments for Space Astronomy
Develop next-generation compact terahertz heterodyne instruments for space-based atmospheric and planetary science.
Best for:Best for electronics engineers or physicists with expertise in RF/microwave engineering, semiconductor devices, and THz technology, seeking a research-intensive PhD in space instrumentation.
Overview
This PhD position at Observatoire de Paris’s LIRA lab focuses on revolutionizing terahertz (THz) heterodyne instruments for space applications. The project aims to miniaturize and improve the performance of THz receivers—currently bulky and complex—by integrating advanced semiconductor technology and innovative packaging solutions. The successful candidate will explore new integration paradigms, conduct RF design explorations, and optimize system performance for future space missions like MADNESS (Mars) and KEYSTONE (Earth). The work combines theoretical studies, simulations, and experimental RF measurements under the supervision of Dr. Jeanne Treuttel and Dr. Yan Delorme, with potential collaboration opportunities at ETEC premises.
What you'll do
- Conduct a comprehensive literature review of existing packaging and interfacing solutions for high-frequency hybrid technology systems.
- Analyze performance-influencing factors in THz heterodyne instruments, focusing on transmission line losses and junction noise.
- Explore novel integration paradigms to reduce front-end volume for multi-channel and multi-focal configurations.
- Design and simulate new MMIC (Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit) schemes using multi-harmonic simulations.
- Optimize interfaces between MMICs and neighboring stages (e.g., LNAs, thermal breaks, ESD protection circuits).
- Perform theoretical studies, RF design, and experimental measurements of novel THz front-ends at LIRA.
- Collaborate with experts at ETEC premises during potential research stays.
- Develop and validate compact THz receivers for future space missions targeting Mars and Earth.
