PhD Position in Polymer Chemistry and Material Science for CO₂ Capture
Develop smart hydrogel materials for reversible, low-energy CO₂ capture with industry collaboration and international mobility.
Best for:Best for master’s graduates in chemistry, materials science, or polymer engineering with strong synthetic skills and a passion for sustainable materials and climate solutions.
Overview
This fully funded PhD position at École Supérieure de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles de la Ville de Paris (PSL) focuses on advancing sustainable materials science through the development of smart hydrogel polymers for reversible CO₂ capture. The project, part of the PRISM programme, aims to address climate challenges by creating materials that operate efficiently under humid conditions and at low temperatures. The successful candidate will collaborate with TotalEnergies and benefit from international secondments, interdisciplinary training, and exposure to industrial applications. The research spans polymer synthesis, advanced material characterization, and engineering of CO₂ capture systems, with potential for patenting and commercialization.
What you'll do
- Synthesize novel hydrogel particles using controlled radical polymerization techniques.
- Characterize the physicochemical, thermomechanical, rheological, and morphological properties of the materials.
- Assess the pKa of functional groups as a function of composition and temperature to rationalize CO₂ capture behavior.
- Conduct reversible CO₂ capture and release experiments to benchmark material performance.
- Collaborate with TotalEnergies on industrial applications and potential technology transfer.
- Participate in international secondments, including a month-long stay at the University of Groningen for rheo-Raman experiments.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences and contribute to potential patent applications.
- Engage in interdisciplinary training programs focused on sustainability, innovation, and career development.
