PhD Researcher in Reconfigurable Electromagnetic Structures for Terahertz Beam Shaping
Develop innovative terahertz beam-shaping structures by combining computational photonics, machine learning, and hardware prototyping.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in electrical engineering or physics with strong Python skills, electromagnetic simulation experience, and an interest in terahertz photonics.
Overview
The Department of Signal Theory and Communications at Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC)- BarcelonaTECH invites applications for a doctoral researcher position. The successful candidate will focus on reconfigurable electromagnetic structures and diffractive elements operating at terahertz frequencies for communications, sensing, and computing applications. The research merges mathematical modeling, numerical optimization, and scientific Python programming with hands-on prototype implementation and characterization. The appointee will document software and findings, contribute to scientific publications, and complete a structured doctoral thesis.
What you'll do
- Design and optimize diffractive elements and reconfigurable structures to control the amplitude, phase, and spatial distribution of terahertz beams.
- Model wave propagation, diffraction, and electromagnetic-photonic interactions using Fourier optics and numerical simulation tools.
- Develop scientific calculation software in Python alongside machine learning and optimization methods for inverse design.
- Fabricate, characterize, and validate physical prototypes in collaboration with the research team.
- Analyze experimental data, document code and results, and prepare scientific papers, reports, and presentations for doctoral studies.
