PhD Position: Acoustically Assisted Manufacturing of Functional Polymers
Develop innovative acoustic methods to control particle organization and crystallization in high-temperature polymer composites.
Best for:Best for engineering or physics graduates with a strong interest in experimental acoustics, materials processing, and polymer science.
Overview
This PhD project at the University of Warwick explores the use of acoustic fields to engineer the internal structure of polymer composites during manufacturing. The research will progress from room-temperature experiments with low-viscosity polymers to high-temperature processing up to 200°C. You will design and build acoustic patterning systems using ultrasonic transducers, supported by multiphysics modeling and advanced structural characterization. The role offers an interdisciplinary environment with opportunities to collaborate with industrial partners and publish research in the field of smart materials and manufacturing.
What you'll do
- Design and construct an acoustic patterning system utilizing ultrasonic transducers and waveguides.
- Conduct experimental research on particle organization and polymer crystallization under varying thermal conditions.
- Perform multiphysics modeling of acoustic fields, particle motion, and polymer behavior using COMSOL.
- Analyze material properties including thermal, electrical, mechanical, and responsive characteristics.
- Collaborate with academic and industrial partners to advance scalable manufacturing technologies.
- Disseminate research findings through academic publications and conference presentations.
