PhD Studentship: Historical Genomics of the Red Squirrel in Britain
Investigate the historical population genetics and conservation genomics of the British red squirrel using ancient and modern DNA.
Best for:Best for biology graduates with a strong interest in genomics, bioinformatics, and evolutionary biology.
Overview
This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia offers an exciting opportunity to explore the historical genomics of the declining red squirrel in Britain. The project combines whole-genome sequencing of contemporary populations with historical DNA extracted from museum specimens to track genetic diversity, inbreeding, and population replacement over the past few centuries. The successful candidate will receive comprehensive training in molecular biology, bioinformatics, and population genetics within the ARIES DTP framework. The findings will provide vital insights into population rescue and conservation strategies for this cherished species.
What you'll do
- Extract and sequence historical DNA from museum specimens and modern tissue samples
- Perform whole-genome sequencing data analysis and bioinformatics pipelines
- Investigate changes in genetic diversity, inbreeding, and genetic load over time
- Evaluate the impact of historical translocations on native British red squirrel ancestry
- Participate in departmental seminars, journal clubs, and scientific conferences
