PhD Position in Trout Cardiac and Cellular Morphology
Investigate how genetics and diet influence rainbow trout heart and cardiomyocyte morphology in a four-year PhD project.
Best for:Best for biology Master's graduates with experience in experimental research, histology, and microscopy who are interested in fish physiology and systems biology.
Overview
Join the Laboratory of Systems Biology at Tallinn University of Technology for a four-year doctoral research project exploring the structural impacts of diet and genetics on rainbow trout hearts. The successful candidate will examine cardiac morphology at whole-heart and cellular scales using advanced histological, microscopic, and image analysis techniques. Working closely with another doctoral researcher focused on cardiac metabolism, you will help identify factors causing cardiac abnormalities in farmed fish. The position offers an interdisciplinary environment bridging biology and physics, with opportunities to publish scientific findings and present at international conferences.
What you'll do
- Plan and conduct experiments independently while coordinating schedules and shared resources with lab members.
- Evaluate whole-heart and cardiomyocyte morphology utilizing histology, immunocytochemistry, microscopy, and quantitative image analysis.
- Analyze and interpret experimental datasets alongside a fellow PhD student studying cardiac performance and metabolism.
- Draft scientific manuscripts for publication and communicate research outcomes at academic conferences.
- Contribute to the academic supervision of students.
- Participate in a shared rotational schedule to assist with routine fish husbandry and animal care on assigned weekends.
