PhD Candidate in Materials Science – Innovative and Sustainable Refractory Concretes
Develop next-generation cement-free refractory binders in a collaborative project between academia and industry.
Best for:Best for materials science or chemical engineering graduates with a strong background in inorganic materials and powder processing.
Overview
This PhD position focuses on the development of cement-free binder systems for refractory concretes to reduce environmental impact while maintaining high-temperature performance. The project investigates three specific binder families: micro-silica gels, magnesia-silica systems, and magnesia combined with hydratable or spherical alumina. The successful candidate will work in a collaborative environment involving the IRCER laboratory and the industrial partner Elkem. The research aims to establish robust formulation windows and provide a deep scientific understanding of the material's microstructural evolution and service behavior.
What you'll do
- Develop and optimize cement-free binder formulations for refractory applications.
- Analyze the relationship between binder physico-chemical properties and concrete performance.
- Characterize microstructural evolution and high-temperature behavior of new formulations.
- Collaborate with industrial partner Elkem to translate research into practical industrial concepts.
- Define robust formulation windows considering fluidity, setting behavior, and corrosion resistance.
- Document research findings and contribute to the European REFFRACTEUR doctoral network.
