Research Fellow in Experimental Fluid Mechanics
Join a leading experimental fluid mechanics group to advance turbulent flow diagnostics and data-driven modeling in aerospace engineering.
Best for:Best for postdoctoral researchers with expertise in experimental fluid mechanics, aerodynamic testing, and data-driven modeling seeking a hands-on role in aerospace engineering research.
Overview
This Research Fellow position at the University of Southampton’s Centre for Experimental Fluid Mechanics offers an opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research in turbulent flow dynamics. Under the supervision of Prof. Bharathram Ganapathisubramani, the successful candidate will conduct wind/water tunnel experiments, develop advanced diagnostic techniques, and analyze complex flow data to inform predictive models. The role emphasizes hands-on experimental work, interdisciplinary collaboration with PhD students and postdocs, and dissemination of findings through high-impact publications and conference presentations. Ideal for researchers with a strong background in aerodynamics or fluid mechanics and a passion for experimental innovation.
What you'll do
- Conduct experimental measurements of turbulent flows under realistic conditions, including effects of roughness, pressure gradients, and surface textures
- Develop and implement new diagnostic techniques to access novel aspects of flow behavior in wind/water tunnels
- Analyze experimental data and create data-driven models for predictive applications in aerodynamics
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present results at international conferences
- Collaborate closely with PhD students and postdoctoral researchers within the experimental fluid mechanics group
- Contribute to interdisciplinary research projects involving unsteady aerodynamics, rotor-rotor interactions, and wing-body junction flows
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in Aerodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, or a related engineering discipline (or equivalent professional experience)
Language: English; proficiency required for academic communication and collaboration
Instruction: English
- Proven experimental experience in fluid mechanics or aerodynamics
