2 PhD positions on Measuring the Future of Power Electronics
Two funded PhD positions focused on developing advanced wideband current sensors and traceable efficiency measurement methods for power electronics.
Best for:Best for candidates with an MSc in Electrical Engineering or Applied Physics and a strong interest in experimental hardware development or precision measurement science.
Overview
The University of Twente is recruiting two PhD researchers to join the Moore4Power project, which aims to advance measurement techniques for high-efficiency power-electronic systems. The research focuses on addressing the challenges of measuring wide-bandgap semiconductor devices like SiC and GaN, where conventional instrumentation often lacks the necessary bandwidth and accuracy. One position centers on the design and validation of wideband current-sensing technology, while the second focuses on developing a traceable framework for electrical and calorimetric efficiency measurements. Successful candidates will work as a collaborative team, integrating their findings to improve the reliability of power-loss evaluation in modern converters. This role offers the opportunity to work at the intersection of measurement science and power electronics in an international, multidisciplinary environment.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and validate wideband current sensors or calorimetric measurement systems.
- Develop electromagnetic or thermal models to characterize sensor performance and parasitic effects.
- Conduct precision experiments to quantify switching losses and converter efficiency.
- Collaborate with industrial and academic partners, including the Dutch National Metrology Institute (VSL).
- Publish scientific findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
- Translate research concepts into practical measurement solutions for project stakeholders.
