PhD Studentship in Long-Distance Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution
Develop theoretical and experimental frameworks for scalable quantum repeater networks enabling long-distance secure quantum communication.
Best for:Best for physics, electrical engineering, or computer science graduates with a strong analytical mindset and interest in quantum communication and theoretical modeling.
Overview
This PhD position at Manchester Metropolitan University focuses on advancing long-distance quantum key distribution (QKD) through the development of optical quantum repeaters. The project aims to address the current limitation of QKD links by creating theoretical models and experiment-ready frameworks for repeater-assisted architectures. The successful candidate will analyze repeater architectures, evaluate amplifier-enhanced and memory-assisted protocols, and provide design guidelines for future implementations. The work bridges theoretical quantum information science with practical hardware constraints, contributing to the development of large-scale, secure quantum networks. The project is ideal for applicants with a strong background in physics, electrical engineering, or computer science, and a passion for quantum technologies and independent research.
What you'll do
- Develop a generalized theoretical framework for quantum repeater architectures to enable long-distance entanglement distribution.
- Investigate and compare specific quantum key distribution protocols, focusing on amplifier-enhanced and memory-assisted approaches.
- Model realistic device imperfections, including loss, noise, and experimental constraints, to ensure theoretical models are practical.
- Provide design guidelines for future experimental implementations of quantum repeater networks, specifying hardware requirements and performance benchmarks.
- Contribute to the development of scalable quantum communication infrastructure by identifying viable pathways for secure quantum network deployment.
