PhD Probing Conformational Membrane Protein Dynamics
Investigate membrane protein dynamics using time-resolved X-ray solution scattering at ESRF.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in physics, chemistry, or molecular biology with a strong interest in biophysics and synchrotron-based structural biology.
Overview
This PhD position is offered at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) in Grenoble, France, in collaboration with Umeå University. The successful candidate will join the ID09 beamline team to study the structural dynamics of critical membrane proteins like the zinc-transporting ATPase SsZntA and the dopamine D2 receptor. Using time-resolved X-ray solution scattering and laser-triggered caged compounds, the researcher will observe molecular-level conformational changes from milliseconds to seconds. The project also entails developing improved experimental workflows to extend accessible time ranges and reduce sample consumption. Candidates will spend three years at ESRF followed by a fourth year at Umeå University.
What you'll do
- Investigate the structural dynamics of membrane proteins including SsZntA and the dopamine D2 receptor using time-resolved X-ray solution scattering.
- Utilize laser-triggered caged compounds to initiate ATP- and ligand-driven reactions during synchrotron experiments.
- Monitor structural changes across timescales ranging from milliseconds to seconds.
- Develop and apply enhanced TR-XSS workflows to extend accessible time ranges and minimize sample consumption.
- Collaborate with international experts at the ESRF beamline ID09 and participate in advanced synchrotron experiments.
- Prepare scientific publications and present research findings at academic conferences.
- Fulfil doctoral studies requirements through enrollment at Umeå University.
