Accelerator Mass Spectrometry in Analysis of Environmental Samples
Join the PICTUS PhD programme to develop advanced separation procedures and accelerator mass spectrometry techniques for environmental and forensic applications.
Best for:Best for graduate chemists and nuclear scientists with a strong background in analytical chemistry and an interest in environmental mass spectrometry.
Overview
This full-time 48-month PhD position is offered by the Czech Technical University in Prague under the PICTUS International PhD Programme, funded through Horizon Europe MSCA. The research focuses on developing fast and reliable chemical separation procedures combined with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) measurements to address environmental and social challenges, targeting analytes such as U-236, I-129, Ca-41, and other actinides. The successful candidate will work in a joint AMS laboratory involving the Nuclear Physics Institute CAS and the Archaeological Institute, Prague. The position includes mandatory secondments of 4 to 6 months at the Eindhoven University of Technology and the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology for specialized training in multiscale modeling, scientific computing, and professional skills.
What you'll do
- Develop fast and reliable chemical separation procedures for target actinides and long-lived radionuclides including U-236, I-129, and Ca-41.
- Conduct accelerator mass spectrometry measurements using a MILEA AMS machine in collaboration with partner institutes.
- Apply AMS measurement techniques to environmental, screening, modeling, and forensic problems.
- Investigate and suggest additional nuclides suitable for low terminal voltage AMS machines.
- Complete a 4 to 6-month international secondment focusing on multiscale modeling, scientific computing, and technical writing.
- Enroll in and complete the required courses of the specific PhD study program.
