Overview

The Quantum Solid-state Physics unit at KU Leuven is seeking a motivated doctoral researcher to explore interface phenomena in ferroelectric/ferromagnetic/superconductor heterostructures. The project aims to achieve electric control of superconducting properties by manipulating magnetic configurations through ferroelectric coupling, offering a path toward more energy-efficient and miniaturized devices. The successful candidate will synthesize thin-film stacks using molecular beam epitaxy and perform extensive structural and magnetic characterization. This research involves a combination of in-house experimental techniques and international large-scale facility campaigns. The position is embedded within a collaborative framework involving industrial partners at imec Leuven.

What you'll do

  • Synthesize Si/FE/FM1/SC/FM2 heterostructures using molecular beam epitaxy.
  • Conduct in-depth structural characterization using X-ray scattering, scanning probe microscopy, and Atom Probe Tomography.
  • Perform magnetic characterization via SQUID magnetometry and cryogenic magnetotransport measurements.
  • Utilize international large-scale facilities for polarized neutron reflectivity and nuclear resonant scattering experiments.
  • Analyze magnetic depth profiles and interface quality to understand magnetoelectric coupling effects.
  • Participate in doctoral training programs and contribute to limited teaching duties in Bachelor or Master courses.
