Research Assistant (Praedoc) in Physics
Join a dynamic research group at Freie Universität Berlin to investigate nonlinear optics and 2D quantum materials.
Best for:Best for physics graduates with a background in optics and programming skills seeking a funded PhD position.
Overview
Freie Universität Berlin is offering a part-time doctoral research assistant position within the Department of Physics and the Collaborative Research Centre CRC 1772 "mol2Dmat". Working under the supervision of Dr. Niclas Mueller, the successful candidate will focus on nonlinear imaging of structural order and symmetry breaking in molecular and two-dimensional material heterostructures. The role involves hands-on laboratory work, building advanced optical setups, and collaborating with an interdisciplinary consortium of researchers. The appointment is temporary, running until June 30, 2029.
What you'll do
- Investigate how molecules self-assemble into ordered 2D lattices on van der Waals materials and observe the emergence of collective excitonic states.
- Contribute to the construction of a new sum-frequency generation microscope integrating ultrafast mid-infrared and visible lasers.
- Apply nonlinear optical and photoluminescence microscopy techniques to connect molecular lattice structure with underlying 2D material crystal structures.
- Develop methods to control and tune the nonlinear optical response of heterostructures using molecular charge transfer and electric fields.
- Collaborate actively with partner research groups within the CRC 1772 consortium.
- Present research findings at international conferences and publish results in leading scientific journals.
