PhD position in Arctic Molecular Ecology
Investigate spatial and temporal changes in Arctic phytoplankton communities using molecular approaches.
Best for:Best for biology or marine science graduates with an interest in molecular ecology, bioinformatics, and Arctic climate change.
Overview
The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) is seeking a PhD fellow to join the POLARIS research project in Copenhagen. The successful candidate will investigate how Arctic phytoplankton communities respond to climate and environmental change by utilizing molecular tools, genomic approaches, and sedimentary archives. This position involves collaborating across disciplines with researchers in geosciences and biosciences, integrating molecular data with paleoceanographic reconstructions. The candidate will be enrolled in the PhD Graduate Programme of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Copenhagen with an expected start date of January 1, 2027.
What you'll do
- Conduct molecular analyses of contemporary and sedimentary environmental samples to examine phytoplankton diversity.
- Develop and apply molecular markers and reference databases for poorly represented Arctic phytoplankton taxa.
- Integrate molecular data with micropaleontological, biomarker, sedimentological, and paleoceanographic records.
- Reconstruct past phytoplankton community compositions from Arctic marine sediments and environmental archives.
- Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary researchers across geosciences and biosciences at GEUS and the University of Copenhagen.
