Doctoral Researcher in GNSS Reflectometry
Join the GLITTER Doctoral Network to advance GNSS-Reflectometry for sea ice and soil moisture monitoring.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in remote sensing, geophysics, or computer science interested in Earth observation and machine learning.
Overview
The University of Luxembourg is seeking a doctoral candidate to join the Water Availability, Variability & Scarcity (WAVES) research group. This position is part of the Horizon Europe-funded GLITTER Doctoral Network, focusing on the application of GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R) for environmental monitoring. The successful candidate will develop advanced retrieval pipelines, integrating dual-frequency observations and deep learning to measure sea ice height and soil moisture. The role offers an interdisciplinary research environment with opportunities to shape research questions related to climate change, hydrology, and wildfire risk.
What you'll do
- Utilize dual-frequency carrier phase data to measure sea ice height and perform ice type classification.
- Develop and implement novel algorithms for phase unwrapping and cycle slip detection.
- Integrate scattering models with co- and cross-polarized observations to retrieve essential climate variables like soil moisture.
- Design and deploy deep learning architectures within the retrieval chain to process raw observations into geophysical products.
- Formulate and investigate independent research questions regarding inland water mapping, vegetation effects, or wildfire danger estimation.
Requirements
Degree required: Master's degree in geodesy, geophysics, remote sensing, physics, applied mathematics, environmental science, computer science, or a related field.
Degree offered: PhD
Language: Excellent command of English; B2-level proficiency in the language of the thesis.
Instruction: English
- Solid understanding of remote sensing, particularly radar or microwave techniques.
- Proficiency in programming with Python, MATLAB, or C++.
- Ability to work independently within an international and interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent command of English.
- Must not hold a doctoral degree at the time of recruitment.
- Must comply with the MSCA mobility rule: not have resided or carried out main activity in Luxembourg for more than 12 months in the 3 years prior to recruitment.
- Open to candidates of all nationalities.
