Overview

The University of Liverpool is recruiting two Postdoctoral Research Fellows to conduct cutting-edge research in statistical ocean acoustics. The projects aim to develop advanced models and software tools to understand and mitigate the impact of spatial and temporal variability in ocean environments on acoustic propagation and ambient noise. Fellows will collaborate across mathematical sciences, electrical engineering, and defence applications, contributing to both fundamental research and real-world maritime sensing solutions. The roles offer mentorship, opportunities for teaching, and engagement with industry and government stakeholders, fostering independent research growth within an interdisciplinary team.

What you'll do

  • Develop advanced statistical models and computational tools to analyse and predict acoustic propagation in ocean environments.
  • Conduct research on spatial and temporal variability, coherence, and uncertainty in ocean acoustics, translating findings into practical applications.
  • Collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams, including mathematicians, engineers, and defence stakeholders, to integrate research into real-world maritime sensing solutions.
  • Present research findings at fortnightly technical meetings, quarterly project reviews, and annual presentations.
  • Engage with defence partners and industry stakeholders to understand and apply research outcomes in national security contexts.
  • Contribute to mentoring opportunities, including co-supervising undergraduate and postgraduate research projects.
  • Develop publications and grant applications to advance independent research profiles.
