Overview

The University of East Anglia's School of Environmental Sciences is offering a fully-funded PhD studentship focused on understanding the complex interactions between Saharan dust, atmospheric circulation, and Atlantic Ocean temperatures. The successful candidate will combine global observational datasets with state-of-the-art and simplified climate models to evaluate dust transport mechanisms and their effects on regional climate and precipitation. Working within the ARIES DTP framework, the researcher will receive comprehensive training in statistical data analysis, numerical modelling, and high-performance computing. The project aims to improve predictive capabilities regarding how aerosol forcing alters global climate patterns.

What you'll do

  • Analyze global observational datasets and state-of-the-art climate models to track atmospheric dust transport and its climatic impacts.
  • Evaluate climate models against empirical observations to understand variances in their simulation of dust and climate feedbacks.
  • Design, execute, and analyze targeted climate model experiments using high-performance computing infrastructure.
  • Investigate the specific mechanisms through which dust influences sea surface temperature, atmospheric circulation, and precipitation patterns.
  • Participate in doctoral training activities and cohort events organized within the ARIES Doctoral Training Partnership.
