PhD Research Fellow in Quaternary Geology and Palaeoclimate
Investigate rock-slope failures and glacial landscape evolution using cosmogenic-nuclide geochronology.
Best for:Best for geology or geochemistry graduates with hands-on laboratory experience and an interest in geochronology.
Overview
The University of Bergen is offering a four-year fixed-term PhD position at the Department of Earth Science focusing on Quaternary geology and palaeoclimate. The successful candidate will develop research utilising in situ cosmogenic-nuclide geochronology to date rock-slope failures and study glacial landscape evolution. Responsibilities involve field sampling, laboratory sample preparation, data analysis, and forward modelling of cosmogenic-nuclide production. The candidate will also dedicate twenty-five percent of their time to career-promoting duties, primarily supporting laboratory operations at the UiB Cosmogenic Nuclide Preparation Facility.
What you'll do
- Conduct fieldwork in rugged or steep terrain to collect rock samples from independently dated rock-avalanche sites.
- Perform laboratory sample preparation and chemical handling, including mineral separation and processing for cosmogenic-nuclide analysis.
- Analyse existing and new cosmogenic-nuclide datasets to evaluate pre-existing nuclide inheritance.
- Run simple forward models of cosmogenic-nuclide production before and after rock-slope failure events.
- Participate in an approved educational programme for a PhD degree and complete coursework requirements.
- Contribute to laboratory maintenance, safety protocols, and external sample processing assignments as part of required departmental duties.
