Water electrostatics in starch crystalline structures
Investigate the role of water content on starch crystalline structures using multiscale computational modeling at the University of Lille.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in theoretical chemistry, physics, or molecular dynamics eager to engage in multiscale computational research.
Overview
This PhD position at the University of Lille focuses on understanding how water content and environmental moisture influence starch crystalline structures through a quantitative multiscale computational approach. Combining quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, and continuum theory, the project utilizes electrostatic potential mapping to analyze molecular and atomic-level interactions within starch crystallites. The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary team, receiving training in theoretical techniques while developing integrated modeling capabilities. The project is expected to start on October 1, 2026.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply multiscale computational approaches ranging from atomistic to structural length scales.
- Map internal water interfaces using electrostatic potential to identify and quantify molecular interactions.
- Investigate the influence of water content and hydrostatic pressure on starch crystallite molecular structures.
- Integrate quantum mechanics, molecular dynamics, and continuum theory methodologies within the research team.
- Participate in team-based training and acquire proficiency in new theoretical modeling methods.
