Overview

This PhD studentship focuses on leveraging advanced Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and machine learning techniques to monitor volcanic activity and seismic events. Part of the NERC Large Grant Expecting the Unexpected (Ex-X), the project involves processing continuous subsea fibre-optic cable data around St Vincent to detect and characterise volcanic unrest. The successful candidate will work within the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia, collaborating with regional seismic networks and undertaking fieldwork. The project offers comprehensive training in seismology, geophysics, and operational software development for geohazard monitoring.

What you'll do

  • Develop automated data-processing workflows for continuous Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) measurements.
  • Apply machine learning and signal-processing techniques to detect, classify, and characterise seismic events.
  • Integrate DAS observations with permanent seismic networks and dense nodal deployments.
  • Calculate improved earthquake locations and perform ambient-noise imaging to examine subsurface structures.
  • Conduct fieldwork in St Vincent to maintain and service the DAS installation.
