PhD Student in Atmospheric Sciences and Oceanography
Investigate mixed-phase cloud processes and dynamics using extensive aircraft measurement datasets at Stockholm University.
Best for:Best for aspiring climate scientists and meteorologists with strong Python programming skills and a background in physical sciences.
Overview
Stockholm University invites applications for a fully-funded PhD position within the Department of Meteorology, focusing on mixed-phase cloud processes and atmospheric dynamics. The selected candidate will analyze over 800 hours of specialized aircraft measurement data collected across diverse global field campaigns. The project involves identifying statistical relationships between cloud microphysics and cloud-scale dynamics using Python. The research provides opportunities to branch into regional climate connections, atmospheric modeling, or machine learning applications.
What you'll do
- Analyze extensive aircraft-based measurement datasets covering wind and cloud particle properties across multiple geographic regions.
- Review scientific literature on airborne instrumentation to interpret data from dozens of specialized aircraft-mounted instruments.
- Develop statistical frameworks and analytical scripts using Python to examine relationships between cloud particle characteristics and dynamics.
- Investigate micrometer-scale cloud processes, turbulent eddies, and atmospheric waves.
- Synthesize research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and presentation at international scientific conferences.
- Contribute up to 20% departmental duties including teaching, research support, and administrative tasks.
