Research Fellow in Vasculogenic Mimicry Mechanisms
Investigate novel tumour vessel formation in paediatric sarcomas to develop targeted cancer therapeutics.
Best for:Best for biomedical researchers with expertise in tumour microenvironment modelling, vascular biology, and advanced molecular techniques seeking to contribute to translational cancer research.
Overview
This Research Fellow position at the University of Birmingham focuses on uncovering the mechanisms of vasculogenic mimicry (VM) in paediatric soft tissue sarcomas, particularly Rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). VM enables aggressive tumour growth independent of traditional blood vessels, posing a critical challenge in metastatic and relapsed cases with poor survival rates. The project, funded by UKRI Medical Research Council, integrates *in vitro* and *in vivo* modelling, advanced imaging, single-cell transcriptomics, and bioinformatics to define VM pathways, identify modulatory therapies, and develop VM-targeted treatments. The successful candidate will collaborate across interdisciplinary teams in cancer, cardiovascular, and genomic sciences, with opportunities for mentorship and professional development in research leadership.
What you'll do
- Conduct research to elucidate the mechanisms of vasculogenic mimicry in paediatric soft tissue sarcomas, particularly Rhabdomyosarcoma.
- Develop and apply *in vitro* and *in vivo* tumour and blood vessel models, including tissue histology and advanced imaging techniques.
- Perform single-cell transcriptomics and bioinformatics analyses to identify key pathways and therapeutic targets.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to design and implement experimental approaches and interpret results.
- Contribute to the development of VM-targeted therapeutics and evaluate their efficacy in preclinical models.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Participate in mentoring and professional development activities within the research group and university.
