PhD Fellowship in Triassic Salt-Sediment Interactions and Reservoir Systems
Explore underexplored Triassic geological processes in the North Sea to advance hydrocarbon and CO₂ storage potential.
Best for:Best for geoscience graduates with a strong background in sedimentology, geochemistry, or petroleum engineering, seeking hands-on field and lab research in reservoir characterisation and basin evolution.
Overview
This PhD position at the University of Stavanger focuses on investigating the interplay between tectonic processes, sedimentation, and salt mobilisation in Triassic reservoir systems of the Norwegian North Sea. The successful candidate will conduct regional geological mapping, basin modelling, petrological analyses, and palaeogeographic reconstructions to enhance understanding of reservoir evolution. The fellowship offers a three-year, full-time appointment within the PhD programme in Science and Technology, providing mentorship, academic development, and access to advanced research facilities. The project bridges geology, petroleum engineering, and geochemistry, aiming to uncover new insights into petroleum systems and their potential for future energy solutions.
What you'll do
- Conduct regional geological mapping of the North Sea using seismic and well data, integrating published information.
- Perform geological restorations and basin modelling to analyse tectonic-sedimentary interactions, particularly where salt is involved.
- Carry out petrological and geochemical investigations (whole-rock and mineral analysis) on sedimentary core samples to determine rock composition, provenance, and diagenetic evolution.
- Develop detailed palaeogeographic maps for key geographical areas based on field and laboratory data.
- Develop and adapt the research project based on your academic background within the broader focus of Triassic salt-sediment interactions.
- Present research findings at national and international conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
- Complete coursework and independent research leading to a doctoral thesis, including a trial lecture and public defence.
