PhD Researcher in Nature-Based Riverbank Protection
Develop innovative, nature-based solutions for estuarine riverbank protection using CFD, wave-flume experiments, and field campaigns.
Best for:Best for engineers with a master’s in civil, coastal, or hydraulic engineering, strong computational (CFD/OpenFOAM) and experimental (wave-flume) skills, and an interest in nature-based solutions and fieldwork.
Overview
This PhD position at Ghent University’s Coastal Engineering Research Group focuses on designing and testing nature-based solutions for riverbank protection in estuaries. The project, part of the RECRAFT initiative, combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD), wave-flume experiments, and field measurements to mitigate hydrodynamic forces on riverbanks while restoring intertidal habitats. The successful candidate will collaborate with industry partners (e.g., DEME, Jan De Nul) and research institutions to optimize modular, scalable solutions. The role involves hands-on research, interdisciplinary teamwork, and contributions to scientific publications and project reporting. Ideal for engineers with expertise in fluid mechanics, coastal hydrodynamics, and experimental methods.
What you'll do
- Develop and validate computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models to simulate tidal currents, ship waves, and their interaction with proposed riverbank protection structures.
- Design and conduct wave-flume experiments to test wave attenuation and hydraulic stability of nature-based solutions.
- Conduct field campaigns to measure waves, water levels, and flow velocities at a pilot site, validating numerical and experimental results under real-world conditions.
- Collaborate with industry and academic partners to refine design concepts and ensure scalability and adaptability of solutions.
- Manage project timelines, deliverables, and reporting, including writing scientific articles and project reports.
- Participate in teaching and supervision of master’s students, as opportunities arise.
Requirements
Degree required: Master’s degree or equivalent in civil, coastal, hydraulic, or ocean engineering, physical oceanography, or a related field with a strong background in fluid mechanics and coastal/estuarine hydrodynamics. Candidates with a master’s in mechanical or environmental engineering and relevant specialisation in environmental fluid mechanics and hydraulics are also encouraged.
