PhD Studentship in Modelling of Heterogeneous Systems
Join an EPSRC-funded CDT at the University of Warwick to advance computational modelling of complex, real-world systems.
Best for:Best for interdisciplinary PhD candidates with strong mathematical and computational skills, eager to explore modelling, simulation, and data science in real-world applications.
Overview
This PhD studentship at the University of Warwick’s HetSys Centre for Doctoral Training offers a four-year programme focused on computational modelling of heterogeneous systems. HetSys recruits interdisciplinary talent from physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering to tackle complex problems using advanced mathematical and computational techniques. The programme combines rigorous training in core modules—such as quantum modelling, continuum simulation, scientific software development, and machine learning—with hands-on research projects. Students benefit from a structured curriculum, cohort mentorship, and opportunities for peer collaboration, preparing them for careers in academia, industry, or technology. Industry-linked projects may also include co-supervision from external partners.
What you'll do
- Develop and apply advanced computational models to study heterogeneous, real-world systems across physical sciences, mathematics, and engineering.
- Conduct independent research in a specialized project area, supervised by academic and industry co-supervisors where applicable.
- Complete core modules in quantum and atomistic modelling, continuum and mesoscale modelling, scientific software development, and scientific machine learning.
- Participate in a group software development project supported by academics and research software engineers.
- Present research findings through written reports, peer-to-peer activities, and viva examinations.
- Engage in cohort-wide activities to foster peer learning and knowledge exchange throughout the four-year programme.
