PhD Position in Arctic Paleoceanography
Investigate past Arctic climate and marine productivity using marine sediment archives.
Best for:Best for master's graduates in geoscience or oceanography with a strong interest in paleoclimate research and marine sediment analysis.
Overview
The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS) in Copenhagen is offering a 3-year PhD position focused on Arctic paleoceanography and climate change. As part of the POLARIS research project funded by the Carlsberg Foundation, the candidate will analyze marine sediment cores to reconstruct past variations in ocean circulation, sea ice, and marine productivity during the Holocene and past interglacial periods. The successful applicant will work within the Department of Glaciology and Climate alongside international collaborators, utilizing diverse proxy methods such as microfossils and geochemical measurements. Enrollment in the PhD Graduate Programme of Life, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Copenhagen is required.
What you'll do
- Analyze marine sediment cores from Greenland and the wider Arctic to reconstruct past climate and ocean conditions
- Integrate multiple proxy records including microfossils, biomarkers, and geochemical measurements
- Examine links between ocean circulation, sea ice, climate, and marine ecosystems over various timescales
- Perform quantitative analysis of environmental and ecological data
- Collaborate within an interdisciplinary and international research team involving GEUS and the University of Copenhagen
- Communicate research findings through scientific publications and presentations
