PhD Studentship: Empowering Green Seaweeds as Beneficial Health Products
Investigate green Ulva seaweeds to profile active metabolites, understand gut microbiome interactions, and support seaweed industry innovation.
Best for:Best for motivated graduates in biology, biochemistry, or related fields with an interest in metabolomics, gut health, and industrial biotechnology.
Overview
This 4-year Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Partnership PhD CASE studentship is offered in collaboration with industrial partner Central Pharma Biotechnica. The project focuses on profiling active metabolites in green Ulva seaweeds, exploring their impacts on gut microbiota and health, and characterising key gut microbes metabolising Ulva fibre. The candidate will receive multidisciplinary training in advanced metabolomics, gut microbiology, cell biology, and industrial engagement, including a placement with the industrial partner. The successful applicant is expected to generate novel insights, publish findings, and contribute to seaweed industry innovation.
What you'll do
- Profile Ulva fibre active metabolites using advanced metabolomics including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
- Investigate the impacts of active Ulva compounds on gut microbiota and overall health using colon models and multiomics.
- Characterise key gut microbes metabolising Ulva fibre and determine the underlying mechanistic pathways.
- Apply cell and organoid biology techniques to study how active compounds affect host gene expression and gut barrier function.
- Engage with industrial partner Central Pharma Biotechnica to explore commercialisation pathways for developed intellectual property.
- Participate in an industrial placement at Biotechnica and present research findings at scientific conferences.
