Overview

This PhD position at Uppsala University’s Department of Ecology and Genetics offers the opportunity to explore fundamental questions in evolutionary biology, focusing on whether evolution is repeatable and how species adapt to environmental changes. The project leverages a large-scale Evolve-and-Resequence experiment on the seed beetle *Callosobruchus maculatus*, combining experimental work with advanced bioinformatic analysis. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Associate Professor David Berger and Dr. Gabriela Montejo-Kovacevich, utilizing state-of-the-art facilities including supercomputing resources and molecular technologies. The position is ideal for candidates passionate about integrating genomic data with phenotypic adaptation studies in an international research environment.

What you'll do

  • Conduct experimental work and bioinformatic analysis to investigate repeatable evolution and genetic adaptation in *Callosobruchus maculatus*, integrating phenotypic, RNA-seq, and DNA pool-seq data.
  • Develop and implement computational pipelines for genomic and quantitative genetic analyses using high-performance computing resources.
  • Design and execute comparative genomics experiments involving multiple *C. maculatus* strains and related species to study evolutionary processes.
  • Collaborate with supervisors and lab members to refine research questions and methodologies based on project progress.
  • Optionally engage in teaching activities (up to 20% of full-time employment) to develop pedagogical skills and contribute to the academic community.
  • Present research findings at conferences and publish results in high-impact scientific journals.

Requirements

Degree required: Master’s degree (second-cycle) in Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, Bioinformatics, or a related field, or equivalent knowledge through extensive research experience (e.g., 240 credits in higher education with at least 60 credits at Master’s level, including an independent project).

Degree offered: PhD
