PhD Student Position in Experimental Quantum Technology: Relativistic Geodesy
Join an international project using optical atomic clocks and satellite links for foundational tests in relativistic geodesy.
Best for:Best for physics graduates with experimental experience in atomic physics, optics, or complex scientific equipment.
Overview
Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf invites applications for a 4-year PhD student position in experimental quantum technology and physics. The successful candidate will work within a collaborative consortium focused on relativistic geodesy using optical lattice clocks and ground-to-satellite time transfer links for the ISS ACES mission. Responsibilities include upgrading the transportable strontium optical lattice clock known as SOC2, operating it at the Geodetic Fundamental Station in Wettzell, and performing high-precision measurements. The position offers an opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary research teams and develop academic management skills.
What you'll do
- Improve and maintain the existing transportable strontium optical lattice clock (SOC2).
- Transfer the SOC2 clock to the Geodetic Fundamental Station in Wettzell and oversee its operation.
- Conduct measurement campaigns during the ACES mission on the International Space Station.
- Analyze, interpret, and report experimental data from remote clock comparisons.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary research groups across the German consortium.
- Contribute to project management and scientific dissemination activities.
