PhD Position in Iron Electrodeposition Diagnostics
Fully funded PhD exploring operando diagnostics for zero-emission ironmaking via neutron/X-ray imaging and electrochemistry.
Best for:Best for STEM master’s graduates with expertise in operando diagnostics, electrochemical systems, and interdisciplinary research—especially those eager to contribute to green energy solutions.
Overview
This fully funded PhD position at Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on advancing fundamental understanding of iron electrodeposition for green steel production and energy storage. As part of the ERC-funded *EcoIron* project led by Prof. Y. Tang, the successful candidate will employ operando diagnostics—including neutron and X-ray imaging—to uncover mechanisms of iron oxide conversion and deposit morphology. The work bridges electrochemistry, materials engineering, and mechanical engineering, addressing critical knowledge gaps in low-temperature electrolysis. Applicants should have a master’s degree in a relevant STEM field, a strong background in operando diagnostics, and proficiency in English (C1 level). The role includes 10–15% teaching duties and access to large-scale research facilities.
What you'll do
- Conduct experiments and diagnostics to study iron electrodeposition mechanisms using operando neutron/X-ray imaging and electrochemical techniques (e.g., CA, CV, EIS).
- Characterize iron deposits and oxides via advanced methods (SEM, EDX, XRD) to correlate morphology with operational parameters.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate electrochemical, mechanical, and materials engineering perspectives.
- Develop teaching skills by mentoring students and contributing to coursework (10–15% of time).
- Publish findings in high-impact journals and present results at international conferences.
- Work at large-scale facilities (e.g., synchrotrons, neutron sources) to advance experimental capabilities.
