PhD Studentship: Physics-Informed AI for Thermodynamic Co-Design of Cooling
Develop physics-informed machine learning frameworks to co-design sustainable, next-generation cooling technologies.
Best for:Best for engineering or physics graduates with a strong interest in thermal energy systems, machine learning, and experimental validation.
Overview
This PhD project at the University of Birmingham addresses surging global cooling demands by developing a physics-informed artificial intelligence framework for sustainable refrigeration technologies. Working within the School of Chemical Engineering and associated research centres, the candidate will integrate thermodynamic modeling, machine learning, and multi-objective optimization to optimize alternative cooling mechanisms. The research balances computational simulations with hands-on experimental validation to overcome traditional thermodynamic and heat transfer limitations. The successful applicant will gain versatile expertise in thermal systems, data analytics, and project management.
What you'll do
- Develop a physics-informed artificial intelligence framework for designing alternative cooling mechanisms and cycles.
- Integrate thermodynamic modeling with machine learning algorithms and multi-objective optimization techniques.
- Conduct experimental investigations to validate computational models and refine cooling system performance.
- Collaborate within world-leading research centres including the Centre for Sustainable Cooling and the Birmingham Centre for Energy Storage.
- Manage project workflows, analyze complex datasets, and document research findings for dissemination.
