Master of Science in Materials Science
A full‑time, English‑taught MSc that blends chemistry, physics and engineering to train specialists in modern functional materials.
Best for:Students with a BSc in chemistry, physics, engineering or related fields who want interdisciplinary training in functional and computational materials science.
Overview
The Master of Science in Materials Science is offered by Paderborn University and runs full‑time over four semesters, beginning each winter semester. The programme combines lectures, labs and multidisciplinary seminars to cover synthesis, structure, processing and functionality of new and renewable materials. Students choose electives in four advanced tracks – Materials Analysis, Materials Processing, Functional Materials and Computational Materials Science – and complete a research‑oriented project and a master’s thesis in a university research group. Graduates are expected to have a solid interdisciplinary foundation and the ability to conduct independent experimental or computational research.
What you'll do
- Attend and actively participate in lectures, seminars and laboratory courses across chemistry, physics and engineering.
- Complete compulsory and elective courses covering the four advanced tracks of the programme.
- Conduct a research‑oriented project in a university research group during the third semester.
- Prepare and defend a master’s thesis based on original research in the fourth semester.
- Collaborate with peers and supervisors on interdisciplinary team tasks and presentations.
- Optionally work as a tutor or research assistant to gain additional practical experience.
