PhD Studentship in Infrared Thin Film Optoelectronic Devices
Develop novel multilayer coatings that serve as infrared-transmissive gas barriers for next-generation optoelectronic devices.
Best for:Best for materials scientists and engineers with a background in thin films, optical modeling, or surface engineering seeking applied industrial research experience.
Overview
Manchester Metropolitan University invites applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship focused on the development of innovative multilayer filter coatings for thermal imaging and night-vision technologies. The project aims to engineer broad-spectrum, highly transmissive interference coatings that prevent moisture and oxygen degradation without blocking vital infrared light regimes. Working within the Surface Engineering Laboratory at Manchester Met and alongside industrial partner Brinell Vision Ltd, the candidate will synthesize and test advanced Ge/GeOxNy structures using magnetron sputtering. The successful applicant will benefit from an experienced multidisciplinary supervisory team and state-of-the-art production and testing infrastructure. Candidates are expected to conduct rigorous laboratory experiments, analyze optical properties, and collaborate across academic and industrial settings.
What you'll do
- Design and fabricate Ge/GeOxNy multilayer structures using magnetron sputtering techniques.
- Incorporate novel polymer layers to enhance the durability and environmental barrier properties of coatings.
- Conduct rigorous optical and physical characterization of fabricated thin-film devices.
- Perform experiments safely and accurately while maintaining detailed project records.
- Prepare comprehensive written reports and deliver verbal presentations on research progress to academic and industrial partners.
- Collaborate directly with the industrial partner Brinell Vision Ltd to translate laboratory findings into real-world applications.
