PhD Fellowship in Multi-Scale Modeling of High-Velocity Dust Impacts on Tungsten
Join an international PhD programme to develop predictive multi-scale models for fusion reactor materials.
Best for:Best for researchers with a background in computational modeling, materials science, or physics interested in fusion energy applications.
Overview
The PICTUS PhD Fellowship Programme at the Czech Technical University in Prague is recruiting a doctoral candidate to investigate high-velocity dust impacts on tungsten plasma-facing materials. This research aims to develop a predictive multi-scale modeling framework to mitigate surface cratering and erosion in fusion reactors. The project integrates atomic-scale molecular dynamics simulations with high-speed experimental validation and machine learning techniques. The successful applicant will work within a collaborative environment, including potential secondment opportunities at Imperial College London.
What you'll do
- Develop a multi-scale modeling framework to predict dust-induced damage in tungsten components.
- Perform molecular dynamics simulations to analyze shock-induced melting and defect formation.
- Conduct high-speed dust impact experiments on tungsten samples and alloys for model validation.
- Apply machine learning algorithms to integrate simulation and experimental datasets.
- Collaborate with international partners, including potential research secondments.
- Prepare research findings for publication in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.
