Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Environmental Chemistry
Join a leading research team to investigate sediment contamination and micropollutants in urban river systems using advanced mass spectrometry.
Best for:Best for analytical chemists with expertise in HRMS, chemometrics, and environmental sediment analysis.
Overview
The French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food, and Environment (INRAE) is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to join the Laboratory of Aquatic Chemistry (LAMA) within the RiverLy Research Unit. The successful candidate will focus on characterizing sediment contamination in the Lyon metropolitan area by applying targeted and non-targeted high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS). This role involves analyzing spatial and temporal trends of emerging micropollutants, including PFAS and pharmaceutical residues, to support water management and restoration efforts. The position requires a strong background in analytical chemistry, chemometrics, and data processing, with opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration across French research institutions.
What you'll do
- Implement liquid chromatography coupled with non-targeted HRMS and targeted MS/MS to identify unknown molecules.
- Perform sample preparation including solvent extraction for sediment analysis.
- Execute chemo-informatic data processing from acquisition to identification with assigned confidence levels.
- Interpret complex analytical data using statistical tests and multivariate analysis.
- Collaborate with researchers at LABERCA-ONIRIS and LEHNA for result development and dissemination.
- Synthesize and present research findings in both written reports and oral presentations.
- Manage chemical risks associated with laboratory activities and coordinate travel for collaborative analyses.
Requirements
Degree required: PhD in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry
Language: Proficiency in French and English (written and oral).
Instruction: French and English
- Proficiency in programming languages such as R for data analysis.
- Theoretical and practical knowledge of chromatographic techniques and high-resolution mass spectrometry.
- Experience with statistical data analysis, including multivariate analysis and data mining.
- Ability to work independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
- Strong organizational skills and ability to meet project deadlines.
- Must hold a PhD in Chemistry or Analytical Chemistry.
- Must be able to work in a public research establishment subject to the French Civil Service Code.
