Senior Scientist/Engineer in Space Technology
Join the Robinson Research Institute to develop advanced superconducting technologies for space propulsion and re-entry systems.
Best for:Best for experienced mid-to-senior-level scientists/engineers with 10+ years in space/aeronautics research or industry, specializing in superconducting technologies, electric propulsion, or thermal/structural simulations.
Overview
The Victoria University of Wellington is seeking a Senior Scientist/Engineer to advance space technology at the Robinson Research Institute’s Gracefield Research Centre in Lower Hutt, New Zealand. The role focuses on superconducting applications, including Applied-Field-Magnetoplasmadynamic (AF-MPD) thrusters and re-entry heat shields, while also exploring remote sensing and custom instrumentation. Ideal candidates will bring 10+ years of post-PhD experience in space/aeronautics research or industry, with expertise in hardware design, electric propulsion, or thermal/structural simulations. The position offers a permanent, full-time opportunity to lead technical teams and contribute to cutting-edge space innovation.
What you'll do
- Develop advanced superconducting technologies for space applications, including AF-MPD thrusters and re-entry heat shields.
- Design, test, and qualify space-flight hardware for performance and reliability.
- Lead technical teams and mentor staff in research and development projects.
- Collaborate on remote sensing capabilities, focusing on non-linear optical microwave sensors.
- Conduct research in thermal, structural, electromagnetic, and computational fluid dynamics simulations.
- Develop custom electronics, control systems, and instrumentation for space applications.
- Write successful research proposals to secure funding for space technology projects.
- Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at international conferences.
