Research Fellowship for PhD in Biological Engineering - ReLEAF
Conduct PhD research on polyhydroxyalkanoate production from waste streams using mixed microbial cultures.
Best for:Best for biological engineering or chemistry graduates with experience in bioprocess technology and microbial cultivation.
Overview
This PhD research fellowship is hosted at the Department of Chemistry of the Faculty of Science and Technology of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa under the ReLEAF project (Horizon Europe). The successful candidate will focus on producing polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) at a pilot scale utilizing agri-water and wastewater treatment plant sludge via mixed microbial cultures. Responsibilities include optimizing the PHA accumulation stage using real-time monitoring through near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. Applicants are expected to conduct rigorous experimental work, contribute to project deliverables, and advance circular bioeconomy technologies.
What you'll do
- Operate pilot-scale systems for the production of polyhydroxyalkanoates using agri-food waste and wastewater treatment plant sludge.
- Utilize mixed microbial cultures for biopolymer synthesis and process scale-up.
- Implement real-time monitoring strategies for the PHA accumulation stage using near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy.
- Analyze experimental data, troubleshoot bioprocess parameters, and optimize operational yields.
- Collaborate with project partners, prepare scientific reports, and draft manuscripts for peer-reviewed publication.
