PhD Studentship in Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Fisheries
Investigate genomics and population structure of wild fisheries using advanced long-read DNA sequencing.
Best for:Best for biology or computational science graduates with an interest in genomics, population genetics, and sustainable fisheries management.
Overview
This PhD studentship at the University of East Anglia, in collaboration with CEFAS researchers, focuses on quantifying genetic diversity and characterising demographic structures of commercially harvested fish populations, specifically Atlantic Bluefin tuna and Atlantic herring. The project utilizes long-read DNA sequencing to generate pangenomes, assess genomic variation, and explore non-lethal age prediction using chromatin methylation. The successful candidate will gain transferable expertise in bioinformatics, genomics, and population genetics while contributing to sustainable fisheries management. The researcher is expected to produce at least two scientific publications and actively participate in academic networks, conferences, and lab meetings.
What you'll do
- Generate pangenomes to capture genomic variation in target fish species using long-read sequencing technologies.
- Quantify genetic diversity and examine gene flow across wild fisheries populations.
- Characterize population demographics and evolutionary histories of Atlantic Bluefin tuna and Atlantic herring.
- Investigate chromatin methylation patterns for non-lethal and accurate age prediction from small tissue samples.
- Collaborate with CEFAS researchers and industrial partners to apply advanced analytical methodologies.
- Prepare and publish at least two peer-reviewed scientific articles based on project findings.
- Participate in journal clubs, lab meetings, conferences, and collaborative research networks to foster professional development.
