PhD Student in Transmission Interferometric Imaging of the Eye (M/F)
Develop 4D transmission optical tomography to image the human cornea in vivo.
Best for:Ideal for candidates with a strong background in optics or photonics, hands‑on experience with interferometry, and solid programming skills in Python or C/C++.
Overview
The Institut Langevin is offering a doctoral project to create a new 4D transmission optical tomography (4D‑OTT) system for eye imaging. The research combines experimental interferometric microscopy, phase‑contrast techniques, and deep‑learning data processing to visualize immune cells and corneal nerves over time. The candidate will extend the existing transmission interferometric microscope, improve contrast, implement volumetric dynamic imaging, and develop neural‑network tools for denoising, segmentation and biomarker extraction. The prototype will be transferred to clinical partners (Hôpital National des Quinze‑Vingts and Institut de la Vision) for studies on healthy volunteers and patients. The position expects active collaboration with clinicians, participation in conferences, and contribution to patentable innovations.
What you'll do
- Design and build the 4D‑OTT system by extending the existing transmission interferometric microscope.
- Improve image contrast and tomographic sectioning using phase‑control techniques.
- Implement volumetric and dynamic imaging of the moving eye and acquire data from human subjects.
- Develop and train neural‑network pipelines (e.g., U‑Net) for denoising, segmentation, and quantitative biomarker extraction.
- Coordinate clinical measurements with the Hôpital National des Quinze‑Vingts and the Institut de la Vision.
- Maintain and calibrate optical and electronic instrumentation, including Arduino‑based control and LabVIEW/NI interfaces.
- Document results, prepare conference presentations, and contribute to patent applications.
