Overview

This postdoctoral position focuses on the integrated biogeochemical processes within the shallow hydrothermal system of Paleochori Bay, Milos. The researcher will examine the interactions between dissolved organic matter (DOM), trace metal complexation, and microbial metabolism in both hydrothermal fluids and microbial mats. Utilizing state-of-the-art Orbitrap mass spectrometry, the project aims to quantify the abiotic and biotic contributions to sulfurized organic matter. The role involves a combination of field-based sampling, advanced analytical chemistry, and multi-omics data analysis. The successful candidate will work within the Yves-Rocard joint research laboratory, collaborating with experts from both the École Normale Supérieure and the CEA.

What you'll do

  • Characterize DOM molecular composition using direct infusion and LC/Orbitrap mass spectrometry along source-to-plume gradients.
  • Conduct physicochemical mapping of the hydrothermal site, including temperature, pH, sulfide, and trace metal measurements.
  • Perform paired sampling of microbial mats and fluid environments during marine field campaigns.
  • Detect and screen intact metal/metalloid-DOM complexes using ESI(+) Orbitrap mass spectrometry.
  • Execute metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses of microbial mat communities.
  • Disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed scientific publications and international conference presentations.
