PhD in Photonic Sensors for Light-Starved Applications
Develop novel ultralow-light photonic chips for advanced spectroscopy and sensing applications.
Best for:Best for experimental physics or electrical engineering graduates with a strong background in nanophotonics and semiconductor fabrication.
Overview
Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) offers a four-year PhD position focused on pushing the limits of spectroscopic analysis by developing advanced photonic chips operating at ultralow light levels down to femtowatts. Situated within the Department of Applied Physics and Science Education, the project aims to create integrated spectral sensors for fluorescence and Raman scattering detection, impacting healthcare and the energy transition. The successful candidate will design and fabricate devices using the NanoLab@TU/e cleanroom facility, collaborate with industrial partners and research groups, and contribute to teaching activities.
What you'll do
- Design and explore advanced device layouts for ultralow-light photonic sensors operating at the femtowatt/low picowatt level.
- Fabricate semiconductor chips using the cleanroom equipment at the NanoLab@TU/e facility.
- Collaborate with internal TU/e research groups to integrate devices with low-noise amplification systems.
- Work alongside industrial partners to explore real-world applications in low-light sensing, healthcare, and energy.
- Spend a minimum of 10% and a maximum of 15% of annual employment time on teaching tasks and coaching students.
- Present research findings at academic conferences and publish results in peer-reviewed journals.
