EngD position: Standardizing Fieldwork and Data Management for Utility Mapping
Develop standardized protocols and benchmark datasets for Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) in utility mapping.
Best for:Best for candidates with a background in geomatics or civil engineering interested in experimental fieldwork and data standardization.
Overview
The University of Twente is seeking an EngD candidate to design a standardized protocol for fieldwork and data management of Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements. Working within the multidisciplinary ZoARG programme, the successful applicant will establish measurement procedures and metadata standards to improve the consistency and comparability of utility mapping data. The role involves conducting field campaigns at the Utility Mapping Site (UMS) and creating a robust benchmark dataset to support future innovations in the field. This two-year position combines academic research with practical design implementation, offering a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between technology providers and infrastructure stakeholders.
What you'll do
- Develop a consistent methodology for conducting GPR measurements at the Utility Mapping Site.
- Create a comprehensive data management protocol for the collection, documentation, and storage of GPR data.
- Define key performance indicators and metadata requirements to enable systematic comparison of GPR systems.
- Plan and execute repeated field measurement campaigns using various GPR technologies.
- Build and maintain a high-quality benchmark dataset for utility mapping research.
- Collaborate with infrastructure owners, contractors, and technology providers within the ZoARG programme.
- Translate research findings into practical recommendations for measurement practices and technology evaluation.
